Thapa peak or Dhampus peak is one of the most famous trekking destinations in Nepal. Dhampus peak climbing is not very complicated. It is definitely at an incredible height, and without proper acclimatization, anybody can get altitude sickness. It lies in the Annapurna region and offers you the best possible views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Himchuli, Mount Fishtail, and many.

Although this climb does not fall under some of the most complicated journeys, it is always better if you are in good shape and health. Like all the other trips in Nepal, the Dhampus peak climbing starts at Kathmandu as well. You will get to explore Kathmandu and Pokhara. Pokhara is a beautiful city and is the gateway to the Annapurna region.

Your journey begins at Kathmandu. You will get a free day in Kathmandu. Explore this beautiful city and experience its rich and ancient cultures. The following day will be a bus ride towards Pokhara. We can manage a flight or private car to Pokhara as well. Your trekking starts on day 4 after you ride towards Nayapul and hike to Ulleri. You will cross many beautiful villages along your journey.

Before you reach the Dhampus Base Camp on day 10, you will explore different places. You will view the spectacular mountains and beautiful sunrise from Poon Hill. In Tatopani, you will get to relax in a natural hot spring. This place will help you loosen your muscles. When you reach Marpha, you will see the different varieties of Apple. This place is also known as the apple garden of Nepal. There is a variety of food made from apples. And the local alcohol is a must-try at Marpha.

You will see the colourful houses at Yak Kharka. And at the base camp, the altitude will hit you. The experience of climbing to the summit of Dhampus peak is overwhelming, and the view is even more beautiful. I am sure that you will not get enough of this place and hate to climb back down.

You will get to explore Jomsom, which is also known as the gateway to upper Mustang. There will be may travellers at Jomsom who will entertain you with their stories and adventures.

Towards the end of your journey, you will get to relax at Pokhara. You will get to explore the beautiful corners of Kathmandu, before heading back to your home on the final day of your trip.

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu
    Our airport representatives will be waiting for you at the airport. Upon arriving, they will take you towards the hotel. You will get a warm welcome from our hotel representatives, and make sure that you will have a pleasant stay.

    You will rest there for the night.
  • Day 2Free day in Kathmandu
    Kathmandu is a polluted city, which is densely populated. But, Kathmandu is a beautiful city as well. The rich and diverse culture this place has to offer is outstanding. Enjoy your free day in the city. You can visit the durbar square and stroll around Basantapur.

    Make sure to eat local Mo: Mo, at any local eatery. You can visit Pashupatinath and Boudhanath with our guide as well. I am sure you will have a great time at Kathmandu. You can stroll the streets of Basantapur and Thamel at evening, and experience the ancient Newari culture.

  • Day 3Drive to Pokhara
    There are different modes for you to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu. The preferred one is by bus, as it stays in the budget and offers you beautiful sceneries along the way. You will reach Pokhara in just 6 to 7 hours from Kathmandu.

    You can also take a flight to Pokhara, and reach Pokhara in 30 minutes. This will save you a lot of time but costs you extra money.

    Hiring a private car from Kathmandu to Pokhara is another alternative to reach Pokhara. This will cost you less than the flight but more than travelling by bus.

    Our team will take you to a 3-star hotel in Pokhara, where you will get another warm welcome. You will stay there for the night.
  • Day 4Drive to Nayapul. Trek to Ulleri
    Total trek time: 6 to 7 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    An early morning bus will take you to Nayapul (New Bridge). You will reach Nayapul after about 1.5 hours. You will be fresh-faced and eager to move forward towards Ulleri. You will see many Gurung settlements during your trip.

    After a few lunch breaks and toilet breaks, you will reach Tikhedhunga. And after crossing Tikhedhunga, the dreaded steps towards Ulleri begins. What waits ahead for you is a 500 m and 3500 stone steps climb.

    Once you reach Ulleri, our guide will check you into a nice hotel. You will get a hot dinner and a good night’s rest at the hotel.
  • Day 5Trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani (2874m)
    Total trek time: 5 hours

    Difficulty: easy

    The morning at Ulleri is always beautiful. You can see the Annapurna south and beautiful hills. You will continue your journey after breakfast. You will now walk alongside the beautiful hills with Rhododendron blooming all over them. The landscapes are beautiful around here, and you will reach Ghorepani after a pleasant hike.

    Upon reaching Ghorepani, you will see a gate with “Welcome to Ghorepani” written on it. You will get to view the majestic Dhaulagiri. You will rest for the remaining day and overnight at Ghorepani.
  • Day 6Early morning hike to Poon Hill (3210m) And Trek to Tatopani (1189m)
    Total trek time: 5 hours approx.

    Difficulty: moderate

    One thing you cannot miss is the beautiful sunrise from Poon Hill. Get up early and head off towards Poon Hill. You will reach there after an hour or so. The view from up there is breathtaking. You can see the panoramic view of mountains and terrains. The valley seems beautiful, and the sunrise is astounding. Enjoy the beautiful view with a cup of hot chocolate.

    You will then descend towards Ghorepani. Collect your belongings and start the downhill trek towards Tatopani. You will walk across beautiful pine forests and alongside the banks of Kaligandaki.

    You can relax in the hot spring at Tatopani. Overnight at a hotel.
  • Day 7Trek from Tatopani to Ghasa (2010m)
    Total trek time: 6-7 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    The mornings in Tatopani are beautiful as well. Have some breakfast and start your journey. You will walk alongside the Kaligandaki. The trail is a smooth ascend with beautiful views. Also today you will be walking on a jeep or bus track, so get ready to be dusty. You will meet many locals who will ask for photographs, or greet you with their smile. Do not hesitate to ask and take photographs.

    You will reach Ghasa after 6 to 7 hours of smooth walk.
  • Day 8Trek from Ghasa to Marpha (2670m)
    Total trek time: 5 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    Today you will reach Marpha. Marpha is also considered as the apple capital of Nepal. Your day starts with a steep climb through pine forest. You can hear the birds singing and the trees whistling. After a few hours of walk, you will arrive at Lete Khola and finally, reach Lete.

    You will take a rest at Lete, and continue your hiking.

    You will reach Marpha after crossing Larjung village and a trail across Tukuche. Locals grow apples in a large number, and you can taste different dishes prepared using apple. The dried apple skin is popular around these areas. Also, do not forget to taste the local alcohol made with apple.

    You will spend your night at a hotel.
  • Day 9Trek from Marpha to Yak Kharka (3680m)
    Total trek time: 6 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    You will be ascending towards Yak Kharka today. The hike is not as smooth as it was before. You will be walking up on a steep hill and through some dense forest. You will get to view the Annapurna mountains, mostly Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Annapurna IV as well as Gangapurna.

    You will see beautiful colourful houses once you reach Yak Kharka. This small village is beautiful. You will stay overnight at a tea house or a tented camp.
  • Day 10Trek from Yak Kharka to Dhampus Base Camp(5100m)
    Total trek time: 6 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    The destination for today is the Dhampus/Thapa base camp. Today you will exceed the altitude of 5000m. You might feel the thin air blowing towards you. But the overall experience will be overwhelming. The beautiful landscapes and majestic mountains could take your breath away (pun intended).

    The trail continues uphill, as you walk through the varieties of alpine vegetation. As you move forward and walk uphill, you will see the mountains standing tall at a distance, watching over you. The beautiful landscapes and valleys are beyond our explanation.

    You will rest at a tea house or tented camp for the night.
  • Day 11Acclimatization day at Dhampus Base Camp
    Total trek time: 0 to 4 hours

    Difficulty: easy

    At such altitude, one can get easily sick without proper acclimatization. This is why day 11 of our trek is a rest day at the base camp. You can get used to the altitude, and hence climb to the summit in the days following. There are lots of activities for you to get busy on as well.

    You can stroll around the base camp, or you can go on a short hike around, and explore these beautiful places. There are many incredible views and places you can visit.

    This rest day will make you mentally and physically fit for your journey.

    As you rest at this place, your guides will prepare the gears and tools you need for the following days.
  • Day 12Trek from Dhampus Base Camp to High Camp(5600m)
    Total trek time: 3-4 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    The rest day at the base camp was soothing. You now have a friendly relationship with the altitude (in a way). The journey ahead is tiring and beautiful. You will walk gradually upwards towards high camp. The trail towards high camp is challenging and tiring. You need to walk slow and rest every now and then.

    You will walk through mountains and rocky hills. You will see glaciers and beautiful mountains. Upon arriving at the high camp, you need to get proper rest to climb the summit the following day finally.

    Your guide will check all equipment and provide you with basic training. Equipment like harness, crampons, ropes, and ice axes are some basic tools you will need to climb tomorrow. You do not need to master these tools, but you should know the basics.

    You will rest at tented camps for the night.
  • Day 13Summit Dhampus Peak (6012m) and back to Base Camp
    Total trek time: 8 to 9 hours

    Difficulty: hard

    Finally, the most anticipated day is here. You will climb to the summit of Thapa peak today. You need to start early in the morning and ascend towards the summit. The trail includes some tough climb to rocky mountains and glaciated paths.

    You will use the tools and climb alongside our climbing guides. They will provide you with any kind of support you need. After a tiring climb, you will arrive at the summit. The view from up there is rewarding. Annapurna I, II, and IV are astounding. You will see Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Tilicho peak alongside numerous other snow-capped mountains.

    After spending some time at the top, and taking enough pictures, you will descend towards the base camp.

  • Day 14Trek From Dhampus Base Camp to Yak Kharka Via Dhampus Pass (5240m)
    Total trek time: 7 to 8 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    You will be getting across the Dhampus pass today and descend towards Yak Kharka. The walk starts uphill towards the Dhampus pass. You will get some of the best views of the mountains.

    Then we will make our way across snow and towards Yak Kharka. Upon reaching Yak Kharka, you will take some rest at a teahouse or tented camp.
  • Day 15Trek from Yak Kharka to Jomsom (2743m)
    Total trek time: 5 to 6 hours

    Difficulty: moderate

    After a lovely stay at Yak Kharka, you will now head towards Jomsom. This will be your last day of trekking. You will start your walk today through a downhill trail. This trail rewards you with pleasant views of the landscapes and valleys. The giant mountains seem to be getting far away from you, but they are as beautiful as ever.

    After a few hours of downhill walk, you will now reach Marpha. Spend some time over at this place and continue walking towards Jomsom.

    Jomsom is a beautiful town which is also considered as the gateway to Mustang. Enjoy your lovely evening at this place and celebrate your successful climb.
  • Day 16Flight to Pokhara
    You will be catching an early morning flight towards Pokhara. The flight will be pleasant, as you will be able to see beautiful mountains and lovely terrains. After 30 minutes of flight, you will land at Pokhara.

    You will be taken to your hotel. Enjoy your stay in this beautiful city. Pokhara has a lot to offer, and many places worth visiting. Boating at the Fewa lake is a great way to spend your afternoon. In the evening, you can rent a mountain bike and ride beside the lakeside. There is a lovely place called Pame. You can take your bicycle to Pame, and taste the delicious local fish.

    You can relax at Pokhara and have a good time.
  • Day 17 Drive to Kathmandu
    Today you will head back towards Kathmandu. Rest at your hotel, and celebrate your accomplishment. The evening at Kathmandu is lovely as always.
  • Day 18Departure
    Finally, it is time to head back to your home. After some tiring days and worthy walks through rocky mountains, it is time for you to get back to your daily life. Our airport representatives will take you to the airport. And with the hope of seeing you again, they will bid you farewell.
