Myth has it that Lord Shiva created the lake when he swallowed the Kalkut poison and felt intolerable pain. In order to get relief from the horrendous pain, he came to Gosaikunda and hit the ground with his trident forming the lakes. There are more than a hundred lakes around Gosaikunda, each of them carrying massive religious significance.

The lake also features a large rock at the center which locals believe is the remains of the shrine of Shiva. Locals also say that the water beneath Gosaikunda Lake vanishes using an underground channel and surfaces in the Kumbeshwor pool in Patan.

This Gosaikunda Trek allows you to witness Gosaikunda, and it’s surrounding lakes up close with the mountains glazing in the backdrop. The journey commences with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche from where we begin ascending towards Gosaikunda.

En route, we pass through the diverse settlements along with the villages of Singumba, Chandanbari, and Lauribinyak. The trail features some of the best views of the Langtang Himalayan range, namely, Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, Dorje Lakpa, etc.

Note: The trip is also ideal for family trips with children under the age of 10. We will be using mules to escort them all the way from Dhunche to Gosaikunda to avoid the long and strenuous walks.

Best Time For The Gosaikunda Trek

The climate in Gosaikunda is pretty unpredictable and can change from good to worse in a matter of seconds. So it is best to travel on the favorable seasons when the weather is much better.

Like other treks in Nepal, autumn (March-May) and spring (September-November) remain the best trekking time for the Gosaikunda trek as well. During this time of the year, the skies are more apparent, and the weather though a bit cold is tolerable.

Try to avoid the rainy or winter season as climates typically are at freezing temperatures in this altitude, and slippery paths can potentially bring unwanted risks.

Difficulty Of The Gosaikunda Trek

The Gosaikunda trek is relatively easy and moderate. So you can sign up for it regardless of your trekking experience. There are times when the trail sometimes gets steeper and challenging, but mostly they have a low angle of climb and are easy to ascend. You will, however, need good physical endurance as the trek requires you to walk about 5-7 hours on average daily.

Altitude sickness can play a part, mainly because the trek takes you above the 3000m mark. But, if you ascend slowly and acclimatize yourself properly, it should not affect you throughout the trip.

However, if you still fall prey to it, be sure not to ignore the symptoms and descend to a lower altitude where the air is adequate.

  • Stay hydrated throughout the trip. Drinking lots of fluids can reduce your chance of catching altitude sickness.
  • If you feel any symptoms of altitude sickness, make sure to alert the guide. Do not ignore the signs as it could worsen!
  • Always travel during the favourable seasons for a safe and hassle-free journey.
  • Carry warm clothes and innerwear as the climate at the top is very chilly with occasional winds.

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 1Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche (2,030m)
    Time: 6-7 hours drive

    Our journey starts with an early morning scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche. After a quick breakfast, we board a bus/private vehicle from Sorakhutte in Kathmandu. The journey then starts as we pass through lush green landscapes and fading rivers as we twist and turn along the hillside road.

    After passing Trishuli Bazaar, the road starts getting a bit rugged and rusty as we move through small cultural settlements. Overnight stay at Dhunche.
  • Day 2Dhunche to Singumba / Chandan Bari (3,250m)
    Time: 4-5 hours

    After a quick breakfast, we depart Deurali and walk alongside the Gosaikunda river towards Chandan Bari. The trail comprises of abundant oak and rhododendron trees. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the chance to witness some of the pristine wildlife and animals such as the yellow-throated martens, wild boars, langur monkeys, red pandas, and Himalayan black bears.

    Upon reaching Chandabari, we visit the local monastery there known as Singumba. You can witness the rich Buddhist culture and traditions residing in the area. We also visit the local cheese factory for a delicious taste of the local cheese! Overnight stay at Chandan Bari.
  • Day 3Chandanbari to Lauribinyak (3,920m)
    Time: 4-5 hours

    On the third day, we start our journey by a steep forest descent and continuing on the trail until we reach a slightly uphill path, eventually leading to Lauribinayak. Enroute we pass the lush forests filled with rhododendron and pine trees. The route also blesses you with some majestic view of the Langtang Himalayan range, namely, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Langtang Lirung. Overnight stay at Lauribinayak.
  • Day 4Lauri Binayak to Gosainkunda (4,380m)
    Time: 3-4 hours

    After an incredible night at Lauri Binayak, we venture on our way to the main highlight of the trek, the Gosaikunda Lake. The path is uphill all the way to the lake. This is the most challenging part of the trek, but the views at the top compensate all the effort.

    Upon reaching the top, the pearl blue icy waters of Gosaikunda lake welcomes you! The mountains gleaming at the backdrop with the clouds just shadowing the lake contributes to picturesque scenery!

    If you want, you can take a dip in the holy waters of Gosaikunda as it has an immense religious significance. Locals say that a dip in Gosaikunda washes off all your sins and wrongdoing in the past! Overnight stay at Gosaikunda.
  • Day 5Explore around Gosaikunda and hike to Surya Peak (5,145m)
    We spend the whole day exploring Gosaikunda, and it’s surrounding lakes. The main highlight of this day will be the adventurous hike to Surya peak which sits at an elevation of 5,145m. Surya Peak provides a fantastic up close views of the Langtang mountain range alongside the terraced field valleys.

    The path leading up to the peak is mostly rocky terrain with frequent steep paths. We also can find unique mountainous vegetation along the route. After a couple of hours of walking uphill we find ourselves at the Surya Peak and rest for some magnificent photos of the rewarding landscapes. Finally, we trek back down to Gosaikunda and stay overnight.

    We also make sure not to miss the glorious view of the sunrise and sunsets gleaming from the panoramic mountain range, which is sure to leave you spellbound! Overnight stay at Gosaikunda.
  • Day 6Gosainkunda to Sing Gompa/Chandan Bari (3,330m)
    Time: 4 hours

    After an early breakfast, we bid the lakes and the surrounding mountains goodbye as we start to descend along the steep moraines. Throughout the journey, you can witness the majestic views of the Langtang Himalayan Range, which you can frequently click pictures of! We stop at Chandan Bari for the night.
  • Day 7Chandanbari to Dhunche (2,030m)
    Time: 4-5 hours

    We commence our journey by descending towards the Bamboo village. After some quick refreshments, we further continue downhill until we reach two paths. One leads to the Dhunche village, which we will be following.

    We follow the trail covered with lush rhododendron and oak trees until we reach the village of Dhunche. Dhunche is a small settlement just below Ramche and has all the facilities a general trekker would require. Overnight stay at Dhunche.
  • Day 8Drive from Dhunche to Kathmandu (1,400m)
    Time: 6-7 hours drive

    The trek finally comes to an end as we make our way from Dhunche back to the capital in a Scorpio jeep. The drive is a pretty scenic one with incredible views of the verdant landscapes and snow-capped peaks. After a 6-7 hours drive, we will eventually arrive at Kathmandu.

Do I need permits for the Gosaikunda Trek?

Since the Gosaikunda lakes lie within the Langtang region, you will require two different permits for Gosainkunda trek. The permits are the TIMS card and the Langtang National Park entry permit. These permits are available from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

How is the accommodation along the route to Gosaikunda?

Since this is a well-famed trekking destination, there are numerous tea-houses and lodges along this route. They have a basic room which comprises of two beds, blankets, and a few pieces of furniture. Most of the tea houses and lodges have electricity facilities to charge your phone or other electronic appliances.
